“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”-Hippocrates

In life today, food seems to be more about convenience, calorie counting,  and quick fixes then about nourishment.  Still, ultimately, all of this is because we strive to be happy – to find more time- to find the easiest way to be healthy so we can keep on keeping on.

In order to be happy, we must be healthy. Many of us don’t even consider what it truly is to be healthy until we’re sick and down for the count.  Then we think about how to get rid of the symptoms and “cure” our illness, which generally comes down to medication.  The norm of our food system and lifestyles have shifted into a game – and one that isn’t a whole lot of fun – a game of point systems, and tracking logs; the search for the cure; powdered drinks to add protein without calories, and chemicals to make food last longer and become “cheaper.”   But where we’re saving on our grocery bills, we’re spending on our health insurance, doctors visits, and prescriptions.

“Nutrition is a major form of health investing. It is safer than the stock market or blind dates to hedge against the inflation of illness. When you eat poor quality food you are dipping into the nutrient reserves in your bones, soft tissue, organs, glands, skin and hair. You wear the results of being overdrawn nutritionally: an unhealthy appearance, fatigue, pain, and mood disorders.” Dr. Ed Bauman.

A change is coming.  Real food is on the rise and we’re waking up.  Real food is nourishing! What we eat can improve our health! Cooking can be fun!  Appreciating food as fuel is inspiring! And taking the time to eat your meal while actually acknowledging the moment to re-charge your battery is becoming a lasting trend!

Now is the time!  Be empowered to take control of your health.  Start with evaluating your fuel.  Change your mind about “a calorie is a calorie” and think about whether or not your food will nourish you.  Change your life by feel gratitude towards your fuel, instead of resentment towards what you ate.

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”  ~Thomas Edison
